The Heritage of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk

From October 14, 2016 to January 15, 2017 come and see an exhibition The Heritage of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk, from the Collection of Polotsk National Historical and Cultural Museum and Reserve, in the large exhibition hall of the Palace ensemble in Niasvizh.

The heavenly protectoress and patroness saint of Belarus, Euphrosyne of Polotsk was the first East Slavonic woman canonized by the Orthodox Church, the only saint recognized by all the Christian denominations. With the power of Faith, Goodness, and Wisdom she contributed to bringing peace to Polotsk lands, promoted education and the Christian way of life.

Surrounded by the outstanding masters (the architect John, the jeweler Lazar Bohsha) Euphrosyne became the first woman to found a convent, to build a temple, to order a world-famous exaltation cross for the temple, to obtain a wonder-working icon of the Mother of God painted by Luke the Evangelist.

Several centuries after the end of her earthly life in the Holy land the Venerable Saint Euphrosyne found eternal peace in her Polotsk cloister having united Constantinople, Jerusalem, Kiev, and Polotsk with spiritual ties.

Saviour Transfiguration Church was painted in Euphrosyne’s lifetime, the frescos have survived till today in their entirety. The fresco ensemble is an absolutely unique phenomenon in the cultural heritage of Ancient Rus. The high level of preservation of the initial paintings of Saviour Church can only be compared with the ensembles of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev (the 1040s) and the Cathedral of Mirozhsky Monastery in Pskov (around 1140).

The inside walls of the temple decorated with medieval paintings were repeatedly covered with whitewash, plaster layers and new oil paintings. The latest painting of 1885 represents a complete ensemble of paintings of historical and artistic value. Thanks to the technologies of the painting exfoliation, the latest two layers were preserved.

The method of exfoliation of the 19th century paintings off the 12th century frescos in Saviour Church of St. Euphrosyne Convent of the city of Polotsk and the transfer of the paint layer to the new foundation makes it possible to preserve both layers of the paintings – the initial layer and the renewal layer, which is also an object of artistic heritage.

The museumfication of the exfoliated oil painting of the 18th-19th centuries makes it possible to get the full impression of the historical and cultural value of the unique architectural and artistic monument – Saviour Transfiguration Church of Saviour and St. Euphrosyne Convent in Polotsk.
